Repositories in education: A systematic review of the scientific literature

The preservation of knowledge in repositories is vital for educational institutions. However, there is no comprehensive study that identifies the state of the art for educational repositories. The objective of this documentary research was to apply a qualitative meta-analysis with a mixed approach to achieve this goal. 194 research articles obtained from the ScienceDirect and Dialnet databases were analyzed. The results suggest that 65% of these documents (126) deal with articles on educational discipline and, in this area, in 2015 the largest number of publications were made. Spain is the country that stands out in scientific production in this regard. The recurring objective in these studies is situational analysis and the most used methodology is qualitative. Mexico has had an outstanding but insufficient participation in this matter. In conclusion, the need to increase explorations on repositories dedicated to the storage of learning objects and development of educational software is pointed out, as well as a conceptual study to order and classify the growing proliferation of repositories of various kinds.
