Hacker spirit: Empowering digital citizens

Abstract

We approach education from the perspective of the first hackers, those who were passionate about shared programming and open source, and who, nowadays, inspire everyone who understands human knowledge as a common good. From the hacker ethics, we highlight some principles to reflect on education, such as: freedom, passion, openness, social value, care, political action and creativity. The contemporary world stresses democracy and brings a new demand to education for citizenship. Such a context requires a paradigm shift that, we defend, can be inspired by the hacker spirit. Among other issues, it proposes the understanding of teachers and researchers as public intellectuals, who are committed to their social and cultural environment. They can assume the political role of educators as activists in the education of citizens that are involved in social transformation through collective and collaborative practices undertaken through digital networks. The articles included in this special issue take a closer look at this entire technological and educational ecosystem to broaden the theoretical debate and propose a change of perspective for public policy and teachers training.

Author Biographies

Nelson De Luca Pretto, Federal University of Bahia (Brazil)

Full Professor at the Faculty of Education, Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), Brazil. PhD in Communication at the School of Communication and Arts/University of Sao Paulo (1994), Bachelor's Degree in Physics (1977) and Master's Degree in Education (1985), both at UFBA. Research fellow by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT). Visiting researcher in (postdoc) at the Learning, Media and Social Interactions of the Universitat de Barcelona. Latest books:    Educações, Culturas e Hackers: essays and reflections (EDUFBA and LMI/Universitat de Barcelona, 2019); Educações, Culturas e Hackers: escritos e reflexões (Edufba, 2017); Uma dobra no tempo - um memorial (quase) acadêmico (Editus, 2015). He was Director of the Faculty of Education at the Federal University of Bahia (2000-2008) and Editor of the journal Entreideias: educação, cultura e sociedade (www.revistaentreideias.ufba.br).

Andrea Brandão Lapa, Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil)

Professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in the Postgraduate Programme in Education and in undergraduate teacher training courses. She works at the intersection between Education and Communication. She participates in and leads the Comunic research group, on topics such as: human rights education, training for citizenship in digital culture; ICT-mediated education, teacher training for the integration of technologies, online teaching. She coordinates local networks of researchers in national and international cooperation projects, such as the project "School-World Connection: innovative spaces for citizenship training". She was coordinator of the Postgraduate Programme in Education (2019-2020) and the New Technologies Laboratory (2007-2013/2016-2018).

Antonio Bartolomé Pina, University of Barcelona (Spain)

PhD in Philosophy and Education Sciences.

Professor of Digital Media and Education at the University of Barcelona.

Director of the Institute for Research in Education at the same institution.

Author of 33 books and 177 articles, he has given 268 lectures in different countries and has directed or participated in some fifty international research projects.

His two main lines of research have been the Design of multimedia learning environments, and Technology-enhanced learning assessment. Both lines converge in blended learning designs and the use of blockchain in education.
