Introduction

Service-Learning is a pedagogical approach, an experiential teaching methodology and a community development strategy that allows students to work on real needs in the environment in order to improve it. Service-Learning projects are balanced projects where learning and service are both equally weighted and articulated to create impacts for both students and partners. This innovative teaching strategy can be developed at all educational levels, from a wide range of academic areas and in participatory collaboration with organizations such as associations, NGOs, foundations, public bodies, among others, all aimed at achieving a fairer, more inclusive, healthier and more sustainable society. Service actions can be oriented towards the different dimensions of sustainability (social, economic, environmental) and can focus on areas such as the environment, social, cultural and artistic heritage, support for education, care for vulnerable people, inclusion, health promotion, promotion of social justice, etc.

Undoubtedly, the Sustainable Development Goals open up broad avenues for the development of Service-Learning projects that not only have an impact on successful education through the promotion of reflexivity, critical spirit, social commitment and creative problem solving, thereby considerably improving students' acquisition of competences, but also, by directing service actions towards local objectives, contribute to responding to the global challenges we are currently facing.

For their part, digital technologies are a crucial element in today's education, and will also play a decisive role for future generations who will share our classrooms. That is why dedicating a special issue of this magazine to Service-Learning is to open a space to show the multiple possibilities of technology to develop, promote or enhance Service-Learning projects that allow us to respond to real needs in our immediate environment but also in other more distant regions, including transnational and international cooperation.

During the pandemic caused by COVID-19, many face-to-face Service-Learning projects had to be suspended. However, this situation also meant that many of them had to adapt to their development in technological environments as well as to the direct emergence of new projects in this complex and changing context, focusing on the new needs that arose. Service-Learning in the environment of digital technologies is therefore a combination worth exploring, in particular in relation to the thematic lines that are of interest for the December 2021 special issue.
