Background: This article aims to learn about online students' perceptions about collaboration in virtual contexts, which are the predominant learning styles among participants and how these affect the collaborative process. Method: We contacted 215 participants configuring a sample of non-probabilistic type. This is a case study based on UOC students that applies mixed methodology to obtain through questionnaires and surveys. Results: The findings indicate that the collaborative learning process is still unsatisfactory for the majority of the sample, 47% of which share the active learning style. Discussion and conclusions: In this article, the need to improve the online collaborative learning process has been argued and it has been suggested that the students' learning styles need to be taken into account when creating the groups.
