Abstract

We discuss the nature of the learning space used in MIT's introductory physics classrooms. These learning spaces are designed for interaction, both in terms of desktop experiments, "in-class" problems done on whiteboards on the perimeter of the room, and "concept questions" answered anonymously during periods of instruction.  We discuss the results of the assessment of this way of teaching compared to the traditional lecture/recitation format of teaching physics at MIT.  We also discuss changes we are contemplating in the TEAL class format in light of MIT's large investment in and commitment to online learning through edX and MITx
