Abstract

The performance of four online tools to detect copy-paste from Internet sources (Small Seo Tools, Duplickecker, Search Engine Report and Turnitin) was re-evaluated after a year of use. The General Similarity Index was significantly reduced in the Small Seo Tools, Search Engine Report and Turnitin. The number of essays given as positive for plagiarism was also decreased in Duplichecker. The failure rate to detect possible copy-paste rose significantly from two to five times only in free tools. Turnitin showed an acceptable reproducibility, whereas Duplichecker and Search Engine Report, had a poor performance. These results suppose a defect in the operation of these free tools.
